Cupar

Historical County: Kingdom of Fife

Modern County: Fife

Cupar has had a long tradition of brewing based on the ready availability of good quality grain. By 1462 monks in Cupar were promoting the use of brewery waste as fertiliser and in 1495 the Abbot granted rights of brewing to certain tenants. The monks, and workmen associated with the abbey, had a daily allowance of ale, and the rental book of the Abbey refers to this as "convent ale""better ale" and "drink of the masons".

The 1831 Statistical Account states that "There are three breweries; a brick and tile work, at which coarse earthenware is made; and a rope work".
