Cupar Brewery

Business: R. and J. Mitchell

Location: Cupar

Type: Brewery

John Inglis owned a brewery, bakehouse, granary, and offices off the Bonnygate in the early 19th century. The brewery was offered for sale a number of times after his death in 1826, and in 1833 was described as "occupied by Messrs Mitchell", i.e. Andrew and John Mitchell. In 1835 Andrew and John dissolved their partnership and John continued the business on his own account, possibly acquiring the brewery at this point; in any event he was recorded as the owner by 1855.

In 1866 John retired and the business passed  to his sons Robert and John, who traded as R. and. J. Mitchell. John left the partnership in 1871 and the brewery passed into the hands of Robert after his father's death in 1876. The brewery was still owned by Robert at the time of his death in 1909.

The site has since been cleared and is now occupied by industrial units.
