Thomson's Brewery

Business: Alexander Thomson

Location: Cupar

Type: Brewery

Alexander Thomson's brewery is clearly marked on Wood's 1820 map of Cupar and was probably established in the 1810s. It was offered for sale several times after Alexander was declared bankrupt in 1831. It was described as having cost upwards of £3,500 but was offered at £1,500 for the brewery, dwelling-house, malt barn and utensils, and £320 for the bakehouse and stables. In 1832 it was described as "still going on under the charge of Mr Thomson".

In about 1850 the buildings were taken over by James Honeyman who established the Burn Square Tanworks. Part of the complex survives having been converted to residential property.
