John Ramsay

John Ramsay had been a brewer in Ayr in partnership with Robert Bowman, trading as John Ramsay & Co. In 1820 he borrowed £120, with James Murdoch and William Brown, from James Wyllie and William Noble in order to build what became known as the Ayr Brewery on John Street in Wallacetown on land leased from John Taylor.

John was declared bankrupt in 1825 and quit the brewery to move to Glasgow, where he died in 1828.

Breweries and other buildings

The old Ayr Brewery was built by John Ramsay on John Street. After John was declared bankrupt the brewery was offered to let and was eventually taken on by Watson & Brown. The probable site has been cleared and is now occupied by modern housing.
