Ayr Brewery (Old)

Business: John Ramsay

Location: Wallacetown

Type: Brewery

In 1820 John Ramsay borrowed £120, with James Murdoch and William Brown, from James Wyllie and William Noble in order to build a new brewery on John Street in Wallacetown on land leased from John Taylor.

John was declared bankrupt in 1825 and the brewery was offered to let, eventually being  taken on by Watson and Brown which they ran in addition to their premises in Garden Street.  After Watson and Brown moved to the newly built Ayr Brewery in Mill Street, Ayr, in 1833 the brewery is believed to have been renamed the Content Brewery.

The exact location of the brewery is not yet known but a possible site is on the corner of John Street and George Street.

Most of the older buildings on John Street, other than churches, have been demolished and are now occupied by modern housing.
