Abbey Gardens Brewery

Business: James Douglas

Location: Dunfermline

Type: Brewery

The property which became known as the Abbey Gardens Brewery in St Margaret Street was originally used for distilling by Henry Scotland. After he ran into financial difficulties in 1811 his properties were offered for sale by public roup. By 1823 the site was owned by brewer John Douglas, and eventually passed to Robert and then James Douglas. Robert Wilson leased the brewery from at least 1855 to 1865. It was then leased from at least 1869 to 1875 by Andrew Greig.

The site was offered for sale in 1875 and eventually bought for £2,000 by John Ross, solicitor and agent for the City of Glasgow Bank. Andrew Greig then moved to the Albany Brewery in Gardeners' Street. At a meeting of potential investors in the St Margaret Hall Company Limited it was proposed that a new public hall should be built on the site. It is now occupied by Dunfermline Central Library, which benefited from a bequest from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
