Tobago Street Brewery

Business: Blair and Martin

Location: Greenock

Type: Brewery

The Tobago Street Brewery was operated by James Blair & Co. from at least 1793, and then by Blair and Martin. It was described by Barnard as "an ancient brewery celebrated for its ale, and the fine quality of its brew has been chanted in many a song. In the year 1824 this fine old brewery was turned into a Distillery, and ever since that date it has been in the same proprietorship".

What then became known as the Greenock Distillery was located at the junction of Tobago Street and Innerkip Street. The distillery remained in operation until 1915, and the site is now occupied by a post-Second World War housing development.
